Guide to Rundle Street Restaurants and Cafes

Happy 1st Birthday to Gninethree! It has been officially 365 days since this baby was born and the 285th post I have posted. Here’s to many more years to come!

To celebrate this one year anniversary, I have decided to put together the list of restaurants and cafes that have been very close to my heart and my home literally. Having been fortunate enough to stay in the Rundle Street area for the past 2 years and being at the heart of where the best foods are, even till late at night, this is my guide through my favourite one road street.

According to rundlestreet.com.au, Rundle Street East is the heart beat of Adelaide’s ever popular cosmopolitan East End District. Specifically located between Frome Street and East Terrace, this area is known for the many cafes, restaurants which offer many affordable lunch specials, quirky shops and Palace Nova with $6 movie tickets for Monday movies before 4pm!

Instead of using the website’s definition of Rundle Street (between Frome Street and East Terrace), I will be including places from the start of Pultney Street as well i.e. once the Rundle Mall stretch ends, to the beginning of Rymill Park. The places are categorized according to the various types of meals- mainly Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert for convenient referencing.

BREAKFAST

1. East Terrace Continental otherwise popularly known as ETC
6 East Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 7days (7am-4pm ) Breakfast 7am-3:30pm Lunch 11am-3:30pm

ETC is well known for their sumptuous serves of early morning breakfast with Eggs Benedicts and pancakes done so well, you wouldnt want to go anywhere else to have that perfect start to your day. My best breakfast memories were all made here.

2. Nano Ready 2 Go
23 Ebenezer Place, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 7.15am-3pm Mondays-Saturdays

Freshly baked croissants, crisp toasted bread for sandwiches and possibly one of the best OJs around- you definitely have to pay this place a visit. The trick is to come early because doors open at 7.15am and they are closed by 3pm with most items sold out way before that!

3. Felici Expresso Bar
261 Rundle Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Sun-Thu 6:30am–7pm Fri-Sat 6:30–12am

Touted as the best coffee experience in Adelaide, Felici is always packed from as early as 6.30am when it first opens till around 7pm when it does close. The new and improved menu is expansive and wide, with waffles, toast and fresh sandwiches available to satisfy any cravings you may have.

4. Sccozi Cafe Bar
272 Rundle Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Breakfast (Mon-Sat 8am – 11am, Sunday 9am – 11am), Lunch (everyday from 12-3pm) and Dinner (everyday from 5.30-10pm)

Scoozi is well known for mostly their dinners and suppers because 1) they are open to really late 2) they have the most amazing cakes at only $4.50 each and 3) their pizzas are made from scratch and baked fresh from the wood oven but this Italian cafe does serve up a pretty mean breakfast as well from as early as 8am!

LUNCH

5. Zambrero – Fresh Mex Grill
2/214-216 Rundle Street Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Sun-Wed 11am-10.30pm, Thur-Sat 11am-3pm

Not so pricey but yummy and hearty burritos with a choice of beef/lamb/chicken or vegetarian filled with tomato salsa, chopped onions, sour cream, guacamole, cheese, corn and jalapeños, topped with garlic sauce/red or green chilli sauce and a squeeze of lime, youve got a recipe for some good Mexican food! Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘fast food’!

6. Vego & Love’n It
Level 1, 240 Rundle St, Adelaide 5000
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 10am-3pm

This vego friendly place is a little shop that you can only gain access via a really narrow staircase and if you walk too fast, you might miss the staircase! This place is handled by the owners only which means that if it gets crowded during lunch time (like everyday), the owner can just decide to lock the front door and no one else can come in except to leave the place because he is too short-handed! But he can afford to do that because his food is that good!

7. Rundle Spices
278A Rundle Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 11am- 9pm everyday

Rundle Spices has a lunch special that offers all rice/noodles dishes at $8.90 during weekday lunch times but otherwise $11.90 for dinner and weekends. This place is simply the epitome of yummy food in large portions!

$8.90 Lunch Special at Rundle Spices

8. The Stag Hotel- Adelaide’s Best Steak Pub
299 Rundle St, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Its FB page claims that it’s ‘always open’

The 1/2 priced steaks deal at The Stag is back!! Everyone say YAY? The deal is only for lunch though and if you are willing to wait a really long time for your order (the kitchen is severely shorthanded and the crowd is huge), the deal is actually pretty darn awesome! For instance, you only pay $17.55 for the MSA*Certified Australian Angus Beef 350g Scotch Fillet which is otherwise $35.10.

DINNER

9. Almalfi Pizzeria Restaurant
29 Frome Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Lunch (Mon to Fri Noon – 2:30pm) Dinner (Mon to Thu 5:30pm – 10:30pm, Fri to Sat 5.30pm-11pm)

My favourite Italian restaurant that serves the BEST pizza ever (or at least I think so) and once you have tried it, you’ll never want to eat regular pizza ever again. Reservations here are a definite MUST and must be made early or a few days in advance to play safe. The common belief that ‘it is less crowded on weekdays’ does not hold here.

10. Belgian Beer Cafe Oostende
27-29 Ebenezer Place, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Everyday 11am-12am

This Belgian cafe is known for two things. 1) Beer 2) Mussels. But I am sorry to say that I have not tried either because I am not a fan of them. But if you are, you should try it because heaps of people come here specially for the beer and the one kilo of Mussels served in a traditional Belgian Mussel Pot, Served w’ Pommes Frites & House Made Creamy Mayonnaise!

Belgian Beer Cafe Oostende

11. EST Pizzeria
30 East Terrace, Adelaide 5000
Opening hours: 5pm- 10pm

East End’s BEST kept secret! I used to think that Almalfi had the best pizzas until I discovered EST but then again you cannot really compare thin crust pizzas with the more hearty types of crusts since they are of different categories. So you definitely HAVE to try this place. Reservations are a must but only allowed for 6 pax and more because they do not have much seating space.

EST again!

12. Sosta Argentinian Kitchen
291 Rundle St, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 7 days lunch and dinner

The BEST Ratatouille in Adelaide! And dont forget your reservations even if it’s a Sunday night if you want a seat in the restaurant with the nice ambiance because this restaurant is pretty popular for their steaks.

Sosta Argentinian Kitchen

13. Jah’z Lounge
10 Vaughan Place, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 7 days 6pm till late

Located at a really obscure part of Rundle street (maybe not but you probably just wont see it if you werent looking for it), Jah’z Lounge offers good food at affordable prices and a lovely ambiance.

Jah’z Lounge

14. East End Yiros
224 Grenfell St, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 6pm onwards

If fast food for dinner is your thing, then the newly opened East End Yiros offers quick and convenient grilled meat in pita bread at affordable prices. With various packs offered on the menu, you can get a good sample of a widespread of lamb, chicken and pork in a set with salad as well.

East End Yiros

15. The Austral Hotel
205 Rundle Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Mon 12:00 pm-1:00 am Tue – Wed 1:00 pm-12:00 am Thu – Sat 2:00 pm-4:00 am Sun 1:00 pm-1:00 am

Austral hotel serves quality food for a pub. Coupled with live music and entertainment, it’s no wonder this place is always crowded during lunch times and at night.

The Austral Hotel

16. Taj Tandoor
290 Rundle St, Adelaide 5000
Opening hours: Lunch – Wednesday to Friday, 12:00pm to 2:30pm, Dinner- Monday to Sunday (7 Days), 5:00pm to Late

One of the few Indian restaurants along the street so if you do need a spice kick then this place is definitely for you. Every dish is fragrantly cooked with so many herbs and spices, the smell greets you even before the dish reaches your table. Piping hot naan and roti is also a wonderful combination with the curry gravy.

17. Chopstix
287 Rundle St, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Lunch Mon to Sun 11:30am – 2:30pm. Dinner Mon to Sun 5pm – 10pm

Hot bowls of beef pho, wok fried vegetables and tofu or tom yum soup are the best combinations for a cold and rainy night. With Thai and Vietnamese influences, Chopstix certainly offers a wide array of foods.

18. Cafe Michael 2
204 Rundle Street Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Lunch: Mon to Fri 12 Noon – 2.30pm Dinner: Nightly from 5.30pm

Award winning authentic Thai food at your doorstep! Every dish was so tasty and mouthwatering! Plus you can adjust the spiciness of your dishes (Mild, medium, hot) for various taste buds. For chilli lovers, go ahead and order the ‘hot’, you will be pleasantly surprised!

DESSERT (THE BEST PART!)

19. Chocolate Bean
18 Union Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: Mondays 11am – 5:30pm, Tues – Thurs 11am – 10pm, Fri 11am – 12am, Sat 12:30pm – 12am

Nobody makes chocolate the way Chocolate Bean does. Love everything about their desserts, the coziness of the cafe and the friendliness of the staff. Definitely a favourite with the sweet tooths!

20. Cocolat

281 Rundle Street, Adelaide 5000
Opening hours: 7 days 11am-12midnight

Crepes, chocolate, ice-cream and cakes. This place has got it all covered. Throw in a mean ‘Cocolat Hot Chocolate’ and you will definitely get a sugar rush.

21. Gelatissimo
280 Rundle Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Opening hours: 7 days 10.30am-10.30pm

And of course no meal is complete without a serve of gelato! With the wide range of gelato and sorbet displayed at the counter, it’s always tempting to want to get everything!

COFFEE/TEA

22. Cibo Espresso
112A Rundle Mall Adelaide SA 5000, Australia
Opening hours: 7.30am-10.30pm

And who’s to forget the ever iconic Cibo Espresso cafe located conveniently at the corner of Frome Street which offers the morning coffee perk at 7.30am in the morning on the way to work or to uni? The takeaway counter offers a quick fix to your coffee run or the hot chocolate necessary on a cold windy day!

Congrats on making 1 year, keep the awesome stuff coming. If only Singapore could be like Adelaide/Melbourne where food is great without any famous/celebrity chefs & restaurants!

  19. gninethree says:

Thank you Paul! I think Singapore holds its own pretty well though! With her wide range of cheap yet good food i.e. hawker centres or more expensive food with better ambiance..

Every cafe except Cibo! That’s definitely my favourite place to get coffee on Rundle St. Vego and Lovin It is such an amazing little spot – huge servings all fresh ingredients, one of my favourites in Adelaide. Am yet to try EST but friends rave about their authenic Italian pizzas. Love your blog, keep it coming!

    • gninethree says:

I love Cibo too! Am always dropping by for a hot chocolate or ice cream but because I do it so often,it has become such a routine that I actually overlooked it while making the list! Thanks for reminding me! Will add it in asap! :)
