London Eats: Ottolenghi, Belgravia

It is not every day that you walk past a shop window and see a wide array of mouthwatering tempting treats displayed so beautifully on cake stands and arranged so determinedly to lure you in.

Opened by and named after Israeli-born chef, cookery writer and restaurant owner- Yotam Ottolenghi, Ottolenghi is a Mediterranean-influenced bakery, cafe and restaurant. This place is all about fresh and local produce with healthy wholesome salads, foods, pastries and cakes made daily on site.

From Flourless Chocolate Fondant Cakes, Cherry and Vanilla Cheesecakes, Mince Pies to good ol’ Carrot Cakes and Chocolate Chip Cookies, the Ottolenghi kitchen executes each baked good with pure perfection and design. And if seduction was served on a plate, it would like this.

It took all my willpower to restrain myself from ordering one of each dessert to try because every single item on display looked that good and alluring. But in the end, it was not my stomach or appetite that was the limiting factor. My wallet was. Because these cakes and pastries did not come cheap. So I grudgingly settled for two. And they were UNBELIEVABLE!

For the more health conscious, being healthy is actually cool here at Ottolenghi. With salad options like Mixed green and edamame beans with lime, chilli and mixed herbs, Roasted mixed carrots with cardamom, chilli, lemon zest and curry leaves or Quinoa with brown and jasmine rice salad with sesame seeds, dried fruits and herbs, eating greens will never be boring again. Mix and match 2-3 different kinds of salads, add on a main course and you have gotten yourself a very balanced meal which is seasoned only with raw natural ingredients and dressings are all made from scratch.

Do note that some outlets are only for takeaways. The one at Belgravia which we visited had only a communal table at the back which filled up pretty quickly especially during lunch hour. Most people would otherwise just drop in and leave with bags of treats. Needless to say, there is never a quiet moment here at Ottolenghi so get in early before all the yummy delights get sold out!
