CNY ’13: Mellben Food Palace (East Coast) | NOW CLOSED

Everyone has definitely heard of Mellben and their signature Crab Bee Hoon. If it is not already one of the ‘Top 10 Must-Try Local Food in Singapore‘, then it probably will be, very soon. But while throngs of people flock to the Mellben Ang Mo Kio branch every evening and patiently wait for at least half an hour in the queue and another half an hour for their food without complaint, not many know the true beginnings and actual story behind the ‘Mellben’ name and how the business first started out.

Named after its two founders- Melvin and Benson, the very first Mellben eatery opened in Pasir Ris back in 1989 and has thrived under that brand name till today, with six outlets all over Singapore. Just last year in 2012, Melvin (pictured right), the only 1/2 of the Mellben name who is still in the food business, opened the newest Mellben branch at East Coast Park. Together with Kelvin (pictured left), his business partner, Mellben Food Palace was conceptualized and born.

Introducing Mellben Food Palace’s most popular item on the menu- Laksa Crab, which is available exclusively to this branch and created specially to suit the taste buds of Singaporeans who have an insatiable love for both laksa and crabs. This Laksa Crab dish is the perfect marriage of two of Singapore’s most loved local foods.

The crabs here are sold at market price, which is approximately $52/kg at the moment.

Served piping hot in a huge claypot, with the crab shell and pincers strategically poking out of that opaque red luscious gravy, the smell is all too consuming and draws you in almost immediately. Use your chopsticks and spoon to uncover all that thick rice vermicelli which has been cooking and soaking up all the lovely flavours from the rich and spicy coconut milk gravy. I loved how this Laksa Crab tasted so authentic and similar to the original Peranakan specialty with the addition of cockles and the gritty textures of the ground dried shimp. Definitely a MUST-TRY and simply a meal in itself. I will be very satisfied with just this pot.

And of course, another popular method of preparing crabs, which Mellben Food Palace executes so perfectly- Salted Egg Crab! The Salted Egg sauce was a huge hit with us. Creamy, buttery and of course salty, with hints of spiciness from the cut chillis, the sauce marinated every part of the crab thoroughly and beautifully. Did I mention that I love chewing on those crunchy fried curry leaves which are simply addictive?

The Black Pepper Crab too was another stand-out. That thick sticky black sauce with random bits of peppercorns was spicy, sweet and simply divine. Unlike the usual black pepper sauce which is usually dry, quite conversely however, it was the slight degree of wetness that made the crab well coated and allowed the meat in the shell to catch some of that pepperish goodness as well.

Mellben Food Palace also offers regular tze char dishes at extremely affordable prices of $8-15 for Vegetables, $12-20 for Meats and $20-25 for Prawns. I especially enjoyed this Mixed Fried Bean $10 which was simply a stir-fried combination of Bean Sprouts, French Beans and Dou Miao. Very clean and green eating.
