The newest addition to level 1 of Orchid Hotel, Souper Sarnies is a sandwich cafe opened by 2 young aspiring girls who are passionate about making the best sarnies (slang in Australia for sandwiches) and serving it to their customers. Not to be confused with Sarnies at 136 Telok Ayer Street, this modest and cosy space which can seat approx 10-15 people, prides itself for using only quality ingredients and making all their sauces, mayonnaise and vinaigrettes from scratch. Most items on their menu are prepared a la minute which explains the slightly longer waiting time but do be patient because the food is quite worth the wait.

On weekday mornings from 08:30-11:30 am, Souper Sarnies offers affordable toast sets from $2.90 and up for the working crowd who simply wish to just grab and go on their way to the office. Top up $3 for a coffee to go. The beans used are from Highlander.

Alternatively, if you have the time to sit and enjoy your meal, choose from their range of sarnies with fillings of Chicken Arvo $9.90, Tuna Melt $7.90, Souper Club $12.90 or Truffle Eggsplosion $8.90. It comes as no surprise if the items here have a bit of an Aussie influence, the duo behind the business had in fact met and bonded over their love for cooking during their university days in Melbourne.

We tried their BLAT $10.90 served with toasted panini and Roast Beef Sirloin $14.90 served with toasted sourdough. While the bacon, lettuce and tomato combination is a classic one, the addition of the smashed avocado was a nice creamy touch and added a dimension of richness to a sandwich that would have otherwise turned out rather dry. Two thumbs up for the BLAT. The Roast Beef Sirloin on the other hand, was my friend’s favourite. With melted gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, spinach, TRUFFLE MAYO and of course roast beef slices all packed in between two sourdough slices, every bite was a hearty mouthful which thoroughly satisfied.

Souper Sarnies has also recently rolled out a new Weekend All Day Brunch Menu which is currently only available on Saturdays because they are closed on Sundays. With items such as Scrambled Eggs & Avocado on Toast and Baked Eggs priced at $9.90 and $11.90 respectively, we dare say that this is one of the more affordable brunch places in town!

We had the Eggs Benny $14.90 and was pleasantly surprised with the layer of avocado spread beneath the beautifully poached eggs. Have not really tried having avocado in Eggs Benedict before and it was a nice refreshing change. The eggs unfortunately, though complete with flowing yolks, had a tad too much of vinegar taste to it. The homemade hollandaise sauce too, could do with a bit more tartness and richness.

For desserts, I highly recommend the Salted Caramel Buttermilk Waffles $12.90 which were spot-on. The batter was undoubtedly a winner with the overall fluffy texture. Not too doughy or eggy and still crisp on the outside, we adored how the sliced caramelized bananas, vanilla bean ice-cream and that generous douse of homemade salted caramel sauce complimented the waffles superbly. I would come back to Souper Sarnies just for these waffles in a heartbeat.

Other sweet treats include this Salted Caramel Cheesecake which was also homemade and the portion was huge! Definitely made for sharing because it was way too heavy to finish alone.

Souper Sarnies also offers soups and salads for those who prefer something light and they are all reasonably priced below $10. To add the cherry on the cake, all prices here are NETT! With no additional service charge or GST, it simply means that what you see on the menu is what you pay. So the next time you are in the CBD, you know where to go for some straightforward, simple and delicious food served in hearty portions with an affordable price-tag.
