Two Bakers @ 88 Horne Road

The Jalan Besar area welcomed a new tenant about a month ago. Two Bakers, located just a stone throw away from CSHH, The Windowsill Pies and The Bravery, excites with its display of freshly baked goods, all-day-brunch and good coffee made from Stranger’s Reunion beans. The space itself sells too with wooden tables, natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows and white-washed walls for a clean and airy feel. Yes, Two Bakers has certainly got the whole concept to attract the cafehoppers in Singapore down to a T.

Food wise, Two Bakers serves up Salads, Pastas and Sides of Luncheon Fries, Calamari Rings, Chicken Drumlets and more, while their all-day-breakfast menu offers house baked croissants and eggs done in different ways.

We tried the Eggs with Smoked Salmon $13.80, which was a neatly tucked croissant filled with a generous portion of smoked salmon and topped with a beautiful sunny side up egg. The croissant was good, sufficiently buttery and crisp with a soft interior that compliments the egg and salmon combination. Compared to my favourite croissants from Tiong Bahru Bakery, these viennoiseries came close, though the lamination was not as pronounced as I would have liked them to be.

Their French Toast with Sweet Caramelised Banana $11.80 was highly recommended by the lady at the counter who claimed that her customer had lauded it as “the best French Toast he had ever had”. With such a bold statement declared, we certainly could not resist ordering it as well to try. Golden, rich and custardy, the toasts had an ideal consistency. Add to that a drizzle or two of salted caramel sauce and some icing sugar, we reckoned that our sugar levels went up a couple of notches after that. But though better than good and probably one of the more memorable French Toasts out there, the bread itself could do with some crispy edges and a tad more browning. Then again, I might just be nitpicking.

Moving on to their specialties which were the pasties and cakes, we picked the Salted Caramel Eclair $5 and Matcha Profiterole $5 to try.  And they were hard decisions to make, considering that there were so many others such as the Key Lime Tart, Strawberry Shortcake, Dark Chocolate Eclair and Carrot Cake also on display, looking absolutely delectable. But our choices did not disappoint with the matcha and salted caramel flavours being spot on. Great presentation too.

Overall, despite being only a month old, Two Bakers has fast learnt the ropes and is coping with the crowds reasonably well. Service is sincere and orders are served promptly. Will probably drop by again if I am in the area to takeaway more of their pastries and cakes.
