Weekend Brunch @ W39 Bistro & Bakery

W39 Bistro & Bakery first made waves when they opened early last year for being one of the few cafes in the West that offered a hearty brunch menu with local delights and decent mains for both lunch and dinner.  Tucked away in the quiet West Coast neighbourhood, this cheery bright-yellow and sky-blue themed bistro, though spacious with indoor and alfresco seating, is usually always crowded. Reservations, especially for brunch which is only available on weekends and public holidays, come highly recommended.

For the drivers, there is parking available around the area if you come really early like us (we had a 9am reservation), and you might just score a parking lot right in front of the cafe (like we did). Alternatively, you can park near the Clementi Stadium which is also within walking distance.

Food-wise, there is an in-house mini bakery at the corner of the cafe, displaying the homemade bakes and breads of the day for sale. You can order their Bread Basket $7 if you wish to sample an assortment of them. As mentioned earlier, there are also local delights such as Chef’s Special Nyonya Mee Siam $9.50 or Nasi Lemak with Roasted Chicken Thigh $12.50 on the brunch menu which we were tempted to order. Alas, we were informed that the latter had a 40 min prep time and the Mee Siam paste had not yet arrived- the downside of being too early.

Between the three of us, we then decided on the Hearty Breakfast $16Fluffy Pancakes $10 and a Brie, Parma Ham Panini $10.50. Truth be told, I was so distracted by the trio of unbelievably fluffy pancakes that the other items seemed comparably pedestrian. Not that they were not good, but those pancakes were just wow, simply wow. We asked for a second helping of the maple syrup (which the server willingly obliged) and thoroughly soaked the stack before digging in. Definitely not for the faint-hearted and most certainly not for those on a low-carb diet. $10 for this awesome plate of fluffiness did you say?

From 12 noon onwards, mains such as Confit of Duck Leg, Wagyu Burger and Braised Lamb Ribs priced between $19.50 and $24 are also offered. Unfortunately, we did not stay long enough to try those items as each reservation slot is only for 2 hrs- a second trip down is certainly in order.
