The Mama Shop @ Pearl’s Hill Terrace

The Mama Shop at Pearl’s Hill Terrace opened to much fanfare in October last year when word got out that the cafe had two pretty lady bosses who were also popular TV actresses – Felicia Chin and Sora Ma. Set up at the former Police Operational Headquarters, the area is a tad run down and takes a bit of navigation skills to get to. The space itself too was surprisingly modest with no more than 5-6 tables set up.

Menu wise, The Mama Shop offers mainly burgers, waffles and pies/quiches with a touch of local flavour with items such as satay and peanut paste with glutinous rice balls. Between the three of us, we ordered their highly raved Happy Peppy Lobster Burger $16.90Otah Roll $7.90 and Okaasanwaffle $4.90. Yes, the prices here are rather affordable.

The Happy Peppy Lobster Burger was served with a side of wheelies which did have us feeling somewhat nostalgic about those primary school days. Filled with chunks of lobster meat and prawn, smothered in wasabi mayo, its description on the menu did it more justice than its taste. The combination was not bad, it just was not memorable.

The Okaasanwaffle  on the other hand, fared much better. Think crisp waffles stuffed with fried seaweed chicken and topped with bonito flakes with a drizzle of sweet takoyaki sauce. There was a delightful contrast of textures and flavours in this one. No doubt that this was our highlight of the day.

As for the Otah Roll, it was a comfort dish that could be put together at home. I wish I could say more to describe the dish but unfortunately, its saving grace was probably only the thick and substantial grilled Muar Otah that took centrestage in the soft hotdog bun.

Overall, we did enjoy the little trinkets here at The Mama Shop and the snacks which took us back to our childhood days. Apart from that, with cafes these days setting the bar so high, The Mama Shop might have to do a bit more to improve on their food if they wish to stay in the game.

  1. May I request to take off the photo (haha joking). You are so nice in your words.

  2. This is one of the times when looks can be deceiving. The burgers, waffle, and roll all look so delicious, too bad that The Mama Shop is not having such improvement in their flavors. You’re right, there are so many food stalls who raise up the bar so high, the shop should seriously consider upping the ante and improve their recipe.

indeed, I feel that Mama Shop food can be better. But the the overall environment is still quite ok thou, not when its a hot and humid weather in the early afternoon :)
