Ippudo SG @ Shaw Centre

Fans of the Ippudo brand will be thrilled to know that they have since opened their 5th outlet right in the heart of town! Located at the newly renovated wing of Shaw Centre (one level above I Want My Noodle), Ippudo @ Shaw bears similar touches to the other outlets with the open concept kitchen, where you can watch the chefs prepare your bowl of ramen and that centrepiece wall of red and white ramen bowls neatly arranged in rows and columns. And while certain items on the menu such as the Shiromaru Motoaji and Akamaru Shin-aji seem familiar, the Shaw outlet has also launched new otsumami (smaller dishes) and teppan (hot plate) dishes to complement their signature ramen.

The Sides include options like Tako Wasabi (raw octopus), Beef Tataki and Goma Q (Japanese cucumber) that were all $6. We had the Crispy Corn and just like its name aptly describes it, it was crispy and crunchy. Lightly battered and then deep fried, these chopped corn on the cob was sprinkled with smoked paprika powder that almost deceived me into thinking I was munching on chips. A much healthier alternative though this was admittingly addictive.

For Ramen, as mentioned earlier, the two original Tonkotsu based signature ramen- Shiromaru Motoaji $15 and Akamaru Shin-aji $16 are also available here. The unique point to note is that the ramen here comes in two sizes- small and regular. This also means that you can enjoy both of your favourite ramen in one sitting without feeling too stuffed after. Those with the huge appetites will also be pleased to know that yes Kaedama (extra serving of noodles) is offered here too.

We tried the Tan Tan Tonkotsu $16 which is exclusive to the Shaw Outlet and while the broth was tasty and the squeeze of lemon juice was a nice zesty punch to the spicy pork miso, we still preferred the stronger and more intense flavours of our Akamaru Shin-aji with its distinct garlic notes and that juicy fat pieces of pork belly as accompaniment.

From the Teppan (hot plate) items, we chose the Beef Steak $15 prepared Medium and served with fries on the side. We made the mistake of keeping our beef cubes on the hot plate throughout and I think it ended up becoming well-done instead and a tad too tough after. A careless mistake on our part. Alternatively, go for the Teriyaki Chicken or Umakara Ton Toro Pork (pork cheeks) and you probably would not commit the same error as we did.

Ippudo has always been one of my go-to places for ramen, though to be honest, the long queues at Mandarin Gallery flagship have been quite a deterrent for me. But not anymore because with one more outlet opened in town to share the customer load, I am sure the queues will be less insane! So satisfy your ramen craving at Ippudo @ Shaw Centre before the crowds starting flocking here too!

It’s amazing to discover more of Singapore food! There’s so much variety. Love all your high end pictures. Absolutely fantastic! I am from India and I find the modified forms of Indian food in Singapore interesting. Glad to have found your site ;)
