Haha Thai @ Ngee Ann City

Haha Thai has been around for quite some time now. Formerly located at Changi Village, then Foch Road in Jalan Besar, this family business has since moved upmarket to Ngee Ann City right in the heart of Orchard Road. What’s interesting to note too is that Haha Thai first started out as a fish farm business. It comes as no surprise therefore that this Thai restaurant specialises in seafood items such as Lobster, Shellfish, Soft Shell Crab, Fish, Squid and Prawns cooked in various different ways- curry, salted egg, lemon steam etc.

We came here for dinner one evening and while the place was not crazy crowded, the number of tables occupied was rather decent for a weekday. No better way to start our Thai meal with some Haha Thai Iced Milk Tea $4.80 and Haha Lemongrass $4.80 drinks. Refreshing and iced cold, the flavour of both drinks were rightfully intense and downright sweet in a good way. I did prefer the latter though for its citrusy notes and hints of lemon.

From the Starters list, we had the Haha Otah $8.80, Haha Tom Yum Talay $9.80 and daily special of Swordfish Sashimi. The first two were favourites with my family with the chunky bits of mackerel in each bite of the Otah and the right combination of spicy and sourish notes in the Tom Yum Talay. I appreciated how generous they were with the portion of seafood which accompanied every spoonful of the vibrantly coloured soup- red to be exact. Spice level was spot on too. The sashimi which was the fresh catch of the day did not disappoint either with its firm and buttery texture. For the raw foodies who are interested, Haha Thai also serves Sashimi Oysters/ Tiger Prawns /Salmon.

Moving on to the Seafoods & Meats, we ordered the Buttercorn Tiger Prawns $18.80 and Haha Himalayan Snow-Baked Seabass $49.80. The prawns was reminiscent of the cereal prawns which I love ordering at the Tze Char stall while the sweet corn kernels gave it a sweet burst of flavour. Fried in butter and topped with shredded pork floss, this would definitely be a crowd favourite. The seabass made an impressive entrance with its presentation and baked shell of himalayan salt which is believed to carry many health benefits. The fish meat itself however was a little fishy and sadly not too memorable in taste.

Do not leave without trying their desserts! And quite frankly, I would make an after meal stop here at Haha Thai just for their desserts. Probably the highlight of our evening, their HOMEMADE Assorted Ice-Creams (2 scoops) $4.80 with flavours such as Thai Iced Tea, Coconut, Mango, Lemongrass and even Durian were honestly something special. Would have ordered a tub to bring home right there and there if I could. But if you only had to pick one, go for the Coconut.

While I was certainly not expecting lava cakes to be offered at a Thai restaurant, Haha Thai does a Chocolate one, Red Velvet and Green Tea. We ordered the Red Velvet Lava Cake $10.80 and had a bit of fun watching the gooey filling ooze out so deliberately and automatically. The perfect shot for Instagram and yes we captured the moment.

For a more authentic option, the Mango Sticky Rice with Ice-Cream $11.80 held its own very well. The rice was sufficiently moist with a drizzle of rich creamy coconut milk to compliment it while the uberly sweet mango slices cut up so beautifully and plated with finesse won our votes instantly. This dessert is only available seasonally though because Chef does not want to serve it if the mangoes are not sweet enough. So do call before making a trip down if you have your eyes set on that Mango Sticky Rice!

Overall, Haha Thai is a great option for family get-togethers and group outings. The food though slightly small in portions, are enjoyable and have good flavours. Prices are also quite affordable especially for its location. For the office crowds around the area, do check out their $12.80 lunch set specials for a quality Thai experience in town!
