Weekend Brunch @ Open Farm Community, 130E Minden Road

Spa Esprit Group has done it again with their hottest new collaboration- Open Farm Community (OFC). Teaming up with Tippling Club’s Ryan Clift and Edible Gardens’ Bjorn Low, OFC is more than just a restaurant and fancy cocktail bar. It is instead an initiative to create a sustainable farming concept which supplies the greens and exotic herbs featured in the dishes at OFC- all grown and harvested in the backyard garden of their 6,000 sq metre property.

The restaurant itself seats about 60 people with an open-concept kitchen and glass panelled floor-to-ceiling windows allowing just the right amount of sunlight to flow through. Service was great, effortlessly smooth and attentive without being overly intrusive. I do appreciate it when service staff are enthusiastic to share more about the dishes and make informative recommendations on what to order. OFC had that part covered quite well.

On weekdays, the menu is all about straightforward grilled meat dishes such as Roasted Baby Chicken, Rib Eye Steak, Pork Belly and Lamp Rump with prices ranging from $28 and up. Rustic pasta choices such as Pumpkin & Pine Nut Tortelli, Watercress & Macadamia Ravioli and Mud Crab Spaghettoni that start from $24, are also offered.

We came down on a Sunday and were glad that we had made a reservation prior as there were hardly any unoccupied tables left. From 11am-3pm every Saturday and Sunday, OFC has a supplementary weekend brunch menu, on top of their regular one which is also available during this period. From Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Egg Brioche to Potato Rosti and French Toast with Roasted Berries, the dishes hold true to Clift’s vision for OFC- simple yet comforting and flavourful food.

Between two of us, we ordered the Ham & Cheese Croque Madame with Fried Egg $26Truffle Scrambled Organic Egg $24 and Buttermilk Pancakes with Creme Patisserie $22.

The Truffle Scrambled was the first to arrive and after getting a bite of the eggs, truffle and mushroom combination, I was sold. The creamy textures of that scrambled egg tossed with a mix of shimeji & portobello mushroom chunks, finished off with truffle shavings and wilted spinach- spot on. The only disappointment was the small portion.

The Croque Madame on the other hand was hearty and satisfyingly filling. Melted cheese layered with salty ham slices and topped with a fried egg and a yolk still runny, this would make even the dudes happy. Of course a side of fries never hurts and that dip of gherkin relish on the side for a touch of tanginess made this whole dish complete.

I personally adored the Buttermilk Pancakes most, not just because of my sweet tooth or because it was the prettiest dish of them all, but simply because the pancakes were sincerely fluffy, complimented by piped blobs of rich, thick, luscious pastry cream in between. The poached strawberries added a dimension of tartness to the overall composition of flavours and the vanilla bean ice-cream was the icing to the cake, literally.

And as its name suggests, the “farm” is the emphasis and highlight of this place. Look out for upcoming events and activities such as farmers’ markets, workshops on how to grow your own produce and activities on gardening for the little ones too! Parking here as with all restaurants at Dempsey is also free.
