Five By Five @ Thomson V One

Opened by the same people behind the now-defunct November 8 which was formerly located next door at Thomson V Two, Five by Five is the newest all-day-breakfast cafe to open in the Thomson area. Unlike its predecessor however, the latter is instead a white-tiled space with glass doors that allow natural light to stream through. The furniture too with its marbled tops and wooden accents sets the stage for a food photography shoot. Quite evidently, it was not too difficult to capture a good shot here at Five by Five.

From the Mains, we had the Salmon Florentine $16.50 which came with two layered muffins of honey ham, smoked salmon and baby spinach- essentially an Eggs Ben + Eggs Royale + Eggs Florentine all rolled into one. While I would have preferred a creamier and richer Hollandaise sauce, the eggs were poached just right and it was overall a heartily portioned brunch item. Not one of the best I have had but still enjoyable. The cafe also offers other dishes such as Miso Roasted Pork $16.50, Japanese Beef Stew $18.50 and Chicken Bleu $15.50.

For drinks, we both ordered a Japanese Matcha Latte $6 each and were greeted with rustic ceramic mugs of warm frothy vibrant green goodness complete with pretty latte art. Taste wise, the matcha flavour was rightfully intense with notes of bitterness. Definitely ideal on a rainy day. Coffee drinkers on the other hand will be pleased to note that the beans used here are from Common Man Coffee Roasters.

Since there were only waffles and ice-cream for dessert here, we decided to order one to try. A classic waffle plain was $6 while the deluxe ice-cream flavours such as Bubblegum, Thai Milk Tea and Matcha Azuki were $4.20 per scoop, premium flavours like the Ferrero Rocher, Coconut Taro and Salted Caramel were $4.80 each. We picked the Thai Milk Tea and Coconut Taro to compliment our waffle and were pleased with our choices. Rich and satisfying, the ice-creams delivered on all counts. I was not able to find out who their supplier was but suffice to say, I would return just for a scoop or two.

P.S. Five by Five has a happy hour from 5pm-9pm where beers go for $5 per 1/2 pint and $10 for 1 pint. Great as an after-work hangout watering hole with friends or colleagues if you work around the area. Plus, they also have free Wifi here!
