The Populus Coffee & Food Co. @ 146 Neil Road

From the same people behind the wildly popular Department of Caffeine, comes a new collaboration with Two Degrees North Coffee Co. called The Populus Coffee & Food Co., located along the row of shophouses on Neil road and a mere distance away from newcomers The Daily Roundup, Luxe Singapore and heavyweight The Lokal. Slated to be the next big hipster cafe to hit the scene, its industrial chic look with copper border tables, wooden accents and marble notes is creatively on point and hard to fault. The food too with unique offerings such as “Spring Pancake & Fried Chicken” and “Ginger Beer Pork Collar” makes it an interesting stop for a refreshing change from the usual cafe brunch menu dishes.

We visited The Populus Coffee & Food Co. on a weekday afternoon after lunch hours and while the cafe was only in its soft launch phrase, most tables were already filled. Not difficult to imagine how much more crowded it can get during peak hours or after it officially opens on 11 November 15. Prices of the food here range from $16 – $23 while a Macchiato starts at $4.50. Orders are taken at the counter while the food is served to you.

Between the four of us, we went straight for The Populus Scramble $17. Think soft creamy lusciously smooth scrambled eggs tucked on a bed of toasted croissant with a topping of marinated feta, slices of cut chilli and strips of streaky bacon for a decadent touch. We dare say that this glorious plate of breakfast elements was easily one of the best we have had. Enjoyable textures with a pop of colour, the portion was just right for either a hearty meal for one and also great for sharing.

One of the more wholesome picks on the menu, this Pulled Pork Grain Bowl $18 is the ideal choice for the ladies who want to cafe hop but are afraid of the calories. We thoroughly savoured the colourful mix of veggies made up of furikake baby corn, spiced cauliflower, red cabbage & apple slaw and much more. All packed atop a base of pearl barley and quinoa with the tender flavourful shredded slow-cooked pulled pork, this bowl made eating healthy taste so good.

If you are bored of the fried chicken and waffle combination already, then this Spring Pancake & Fried Chicken $21 will definitely be right up your alley and the twist makes it even more charming. The fried chicken itself was succulent, moist and cooked to almost perfection while the pancake with its sweet nuances from the sweet corn and spicy earthiness of cumin powder was something special. Though we did think that the cumin part could be toned down just a little more as some may find it a tad potent. Nonetheless, the overlaying ranch dressing pulled all the components together and we applaud The Populus Coffee & Food Co. for being adventurous with their food.

Ending it all off with a Dark Chocolate Sundae $13, we certainly could not take our eyes off this pretty dessert when it arrived at our table. The ice-cream was intensely chocolate-packed complete with its bittersweet notes all intact, accompanied by hazelnut crumb, honeycomb, raspberry puree and finished with a generous douse of passionfruit curd. While it may sound like a lot was going on in a single bowl, the result was undeniably good and let’s face it, who can resist those dainty and elegant floral embellishments?

Overall, The Populus Coffee & Food Co. just proved that competition in our already very saturated cafe scene just got stiffer. Offering good coffee and interesting quality food, this cafe has certainly upped the ante and is the one to look out for. The Populus Coffee & Food Co. is also expected to expand their menu even further after their official opening so add them to your lists of food places to visit. You will not regret it.
