Staycation: Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore

Formerly known as Traders Hotel Singapore, Hotel Jen has since taken over the property, undergone a multi-million dollar makeover and been renamed as Hotel Jen Tanglin. While the exterior of the hotel maintains its plain and somewhat dull shell, the interior however is a whole new world altogether. Step through those automated sliding doors and embrace the new upbeat stylish attitude of the “Jen” spirit. The concept is contemporary, design is satisfactorily hipster without trying too hard while the overall vibe is energetic, fresh and welcoming.

After our own 2D1N experience, we have put together a list of 8 reasons why Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore caters to both the “millennially minded” business and leisure traveller.

1. Vibrant and Stylish Guest Rooms

Each of the 565 rooms in the property has its own individual locally curated wallpaper and includes thoughtful touches such as free WiFi, USB charger outlets, high pressure walk-in showers, and “floating” beds with 300-thread count linen for that ultimate beauty’s night sleep. Some of the rooms are also equipped with interactive TVs with multi-device enabled streaming (something like AirPlay or GoogleCast but the Samsung version). This is a great entertainment supplement to the normal cable TV channels! Unfortunately for us, our room did not have a SMART TV so we had to make do with a HDMI cable which worked out the same in the end.

Did we also mention that we loved the character of the room for its colour scheme, fancy lights and graphic nature? While the rooms may not be extremely spacious, it is sufficiently cosy and very comfortable for two to stay.

2. The Club Lounge

We strongly recommend that you pay a little extra for the Club Rooms. This includes access to the Hotel Jen Club Lounge which is located at level 17 and offers an unblocked view of the estate’s surroundings. No better way to enjoy that morning breakfast by the window or that evening glass of wine at the bar counter seats as you catch a glimpse of that sunset. Look out for mid-afternoon culinary treats and canapes at the stylish lounge throughout the day and even supper snacks at midnight if you get lucky!

Special launch offer: Enjoy staying at the Club Room for an introductory offer of SGD$299 per night until February 2016.

3. Healthy Food Options at J65

J65 is the new buffet restaurant at Hotel Jen Tanglin. Though the restaurant is located at the former Cafebiz, the space has been renovated to provide a more open concept with a local farmer’s market look and feel. Options also include a wide variety of healthy and fresh options such as superfoods salads, grilled vegetable sandwiches and brown rice sushi! For those who need something more substantial, there are Hong Kong BBQ meats, laksa and other Southeast Asian dishes available. The best part is that prices are all nett at this restaurant!

  • Lunch
    • Monday to Friday (12pm-2.30pm) = $29 nett
    • Saturday (12pm-3pm) = $58 nett
    • Sunday Brunch (12pm-3pm) = $98 nett or $138 nett with free-flowing Champagne, wine, beer, juices and soft drinks
  • Dinner
    • Sunday to Wednesday (6pm-9.30pm) = $58 nett
    • Thursday to Saturday (6pm-10pm) = $78 nett with Fin de Claire oysters, sushi and sashimi, tiger prawns, Boston lobster and Sri Lankan crab

4. Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go

Located also at the lobby lounge of the hotel, adjacent to J65, is Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go. This cafe and snack bar is open 24 hours and offers plenty of food choices such as sandwiches, cut fruit, soups and desserts, conveniently packaged for you to simply grab and go. The coffee served here is made with artisanal roasted beans from local barista- Nomad the Gallant while a selection of wines and craft beers are also on the menu.

5. Dirty Milkshakes 24/7

We personally loved their range of “Dirty Milkshakes” at Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go and boy was that barista not only skilled to brew a cup of good coffee, latte art included, he was also superb at whipping up a mean mug of milkshake. We went for the “Death by Brownie” and slurped it down to the last drop. Having a midnight craving for a Melted Peanut Butter or Vanilla Strawberry milkshake? This cafe is definitely the place for you.

6. “TAPAO”

True to its spirit of supporting local culture and offering guests an authentic Singaporean experience, Hotel Jen Tanglin encourages you to “tapao” your food or drinks back to your room to enjoy. We thoroughly appreciated the paper cups and boxes (all made with recycled brown paper no less) made available at the Club Lounge and restaurants for us to pack the leftover food which we could not finish, thereby reducing wastage. Great initiative!

7. Keeping Fit

Enjoying life and keeping fit is all too easy at Hotel Jen Tanglin even while you are on holiday. The gym has 24 hours access while the 30m outdoor pool with those bright yellow patio umbrellas and ocean blue deck chairs are ideal for relaxing and unwinding. And after sweating it out, do not forget to reward yourself at Ah Hoi’s Kitchen, located only a stone throw away from the gym and pool. This well-loved restaurant which has been in existence since Traders Hotel, is an institution itself and known for its classic dishes that reflect the true flavours of Singapore Straits cuisine!

8. Great Accessibility

Hotel Jen Tanglin offers a free shuttle service to Orchard Road, as well as weekday morning shuttle services to the Central Business District so your transportation for both work and play is well taken care of. For those who wish to explore the city by yourselves, there are also bicycles which you can borrow from the hotel. Simply approach any of their staff to find out more and for tips on any cultural spots to visit or hidden gems in the city to check out and food places that are a must try! The hotel is also connected to Tanglin Mall so you actually need not travel too far to do a spot of shopping.
