The Plain Jane Cafe @ Blk 221 Serangoon Ave 4

Located at the ground floor of a HDB block opposite Serangoon Stadium, is a humble quaint little cafe that specialises in Swiss Rolls, both for dining-in and takeaway. Opened in Dec last year, The Plain Jane is definitely not plain at all with its marbled and wooden accents, pretty accessories and delicate touches that makes this space cozy and ideal for an afternoon tea session with a good friend. Brownie points too for their special attention to the crockery and flowery plates that compliment the old-school feeling of this place.

Serving up to 7-8 different flavours of Swiss Rolls such as Matcha, Yuzu and Raspberry each day, it is interesting to note the disproportionate ratio of cream to sponge here at The Plain Jane. That said, we were certainly not complaining because the essence of each flavour is most pronounced in the whipped cream that interlace each spiral. Between us two and after much debate, we eventually settled for the Earl Grey Tea, Thai Milk Tea and Nutella Swiss Rolls. Prices are $4.90-$5.90 per individual slice.

The Nutella one was intensely chocolatey, surprisingly not too sweet with undertones of hazelnut while the Thai Milk Tea which was made with authentic Thai Tea leaves imported from Bangkok, was smooth and creamy, complete with its distinct rich floral notes. Our personal favourite however was the Earl Grey which won us over by its sharp black tea profile and citrus elegance.

And even though the flavoured cream was the highlight of each roll, props too also to the delightfully light sponge cake which was chiffony-soft, beautifully aerated and oh-so-fluffy.

Overall, while I did not think I would travel all the way to Serangoon for a sponge cake with cream that could technically be found at any neighbourhood bakery, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed The Plain Jane’s take on the well-loved traditional Swiss Roll. My only regret was not buying back a whole roll (which divides into 8 individual portions) of that memorable Earl Grey for everyone at home to share and try!

Coffee connoisseurs will also be happy to note that they can savour their slice of Swiss Roll with a cuppa made with Handlebar Espresso beans by the Gentlemen’s Coffee Company, complete with decent latte art.
