Celebrate Hina Matsuri from 1-10 March 2016 @ Mikuni, Fairmont Hotel

Hina Matsuri (Doll’s Festival or Girls’ Day) is a day for families to pray for the happiness and healthy growth of their daughters. Celebrated every 3rd March in Japan, families would commemorate this day by setting up a display of dolls within the house, and present food offerings to these human look-alikes.

Running for the fourth year in a row, Chef Moon of Mikuni has once again applied his magic to conjure up an exclusive set menu to celebrate the special occasion of girls in the world. Having said that, the male counterparts are equally entitled to have a taste of Chef Moon’s culinary creations!

Dinner started off with an inviting bowl of fresh green salad, topped with chunky pieces of sweet snow crab. Within the colourful assortment, you can find lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, blueberries, tangerines, and meat from the 8 legged ocean beauty. Although it may seem a tad simple, this appetizer was extremely light and well-balanced which prepped us perfectly well for the luxurious feast coming up next.

This coveted 3 tier box was literally the embodiment of fancy which left us floating on cloud nine. The excitement of pulling the drawers ever so slowly and revealing the treasures akin to that of an imperial feast was simply remarkable.

Starting from the top tier, we were entranced by the glistening slices of yellow tail sashimi swimming in a pool of truffle soy sauce. As though insufficient, Chef Moon had brilliantly added slices of the prized delicacy to elevate the truffle flavour without it being too overwhelming.

Proceeding to the middle tier was a drawer of warm, comforting flavours. Contained within the dainty compartment were grilled miso cod, slow-cooked abalone, unagi, octopus, umeboshi plum, asparagus, pickles and an adorable miso quail egg that was disguised as a fruit.

The last tier was undeniably the most decadent one. Featuring thick, succulent pieces of Miyazaki Wagyu beef stacked atop a bed of rice, along with crispy nori, shrimp and sweet egg cubes. The added scoops of ikura not only made the ‘chriashi don’ even more appealing with its attractive tangerine hue, it also accentuated the flavour of the wagyu beef with its natural juices. Overall, pure meaty bliss!

Completing the bento set was a plate of mixed tempura, deep fried to golden brown perfection, and a bowl of miso soup.

Despite the seemingly harmless serving portions, we were all close to full, and dessert filled the gap beautifully. Soft, smooth and honey-sweet, the exclusive Shizuoka muskmelon was a perfect complement to the refreshing salt ice cream!

This Hina Matsuri Set is only available for lunch, from 1 March to 10 March 2016.
