The Bird Southern Table & Bar @ Marina Bay Sands

Another franchise has opened in Singapore and this time, it is one that is synonymous with fried chicken and waffles in the United States. The Bird Southern Table & Bar or more commonly known as Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in U.S. is all about soul food, big flavours, hearty portions and the Southern hospitality. Its flagship did originate in Miami after all and the opening of this Singapore outlet marks the brand’s first foray into the Southeast Asian market.

Located at South Promenade of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, this restaurant can seat up to 190 pax and has two levels stretching across B1 and L1 although we highly recommend taking the bar seats on the ground floor which overlooks the waterfront promenade.

The main star of this place is none other than the Chicken N Watermelon N Waffles $45. This platter boasts of 1/2 a fried chicken, cheddar waffles and chilled watermelon cubes. The meat itself was tender, juicy and moist. Finger licking goodness in every bite for the drumstick and wing portions while the breast meat was understandably a tad drier and needed an extra douse of honey hot sauce. Waffles were more of the savory kind with the addition of cheddar and were best enjoyed with a good serving of bourbon maple syrup. Good for two to share and more than enough for someone with a huge appetite to finish.

Cocktails are another specialty at The Bird where quality handcrafted creations are made. We tried the Southern Peach $24 and Watermelon Sling $24, and were pleasantly surprised at the sharp kick of alcohol in each drink despite its cheery summer appearance. The former featured Wild Turkey 81 mixed with white peach puree & sweet tea while the latter was a refreshing blend of Death’s Door white whiskey and fresh pressed watermelon juice. The Bird also carries one of the most extensive and rare collections of Bourbons in Asia and around the world so this might just be the next watering hole for after work drinks!

Appetizers that are worth trying include the Deviled Eggs $14 and Fried Green Tomato BLT $18. Do not leave without trying The Bird’s unique take on the well-loved BLT combo. This one is made up of a stack of house-smoked pork belly, a fried pimento cheese panko-crusted green tomato slice which was extra crunchy and refreshing when you bite through the breading, and complete with a layer of smoky tomato jam. Superb!

Leave some or a lot of tummy space for the Macaroni & Cheese $14 which is made with five different types of cheeses! This only means that it is extremely creamy and honestly very heavy on the palate so you probably will need to share this with many people. A few bites is good but a few more might be too much.

Not sure why people would come to The Bird and order a salad but if you had to then the Butter Lettuce & Grilled Mango Salad $18 would be your best bet! Never knew how good char-grilled mango could taste but yes we found that out when we tried this. Full of flavour and appetizing, we could not decide if those sweet mangoes, smoked pecans or that light refreshing benne seed vinaigrette was more outstanding. Probably the most understated dish of our afternoon.

Dessert was a Banana Pudding $14 which looked somewhat like a tiramisu with its layers of rum soaked banana cake, chantilly cream, fresh bananas and vanilla wafers. Just like the other dishes we had, this was also unapologetically full on in flavour, creaminess and sweetness. This might look petite in size but oh boy it really does require an extra tummy to finish it.

Overall, The Bird Southern Table and Bar is a welcoming addition to the rows of franchises and celebrity restaurants in MBS. It offers Singaporeans a glimpse and taste of the down-to-earth, comforting and soul of Southern cuisine. While prices are not exactly cheap, the portions and flavours make up for it. Best to come in a group so that you get to try a bit of everything and still be able to walk out of the restaurant without a bursting belly!
