CNY ’18: Reunions of Joy & Prosperity @ Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

It is the start of a brand new year and as always, once the Christmas festivities are over, the Chinese New Year ones kick into full swing. As many Chinese restaurants gear up for this annual jubilant affair, Marriott Singapore’s Wan Hao Chinese restaurant too will also be ushering into the Year of the Dog with prosperous masterfully crafted set menus and oriental takeaways that are available from 16 Jan to 2 Mar 18.

This treasure pot is brimming with gourmet delicacies from both land and sea. With at least 14 luxury ingredients such as Australian 3-head Abalone, Crispy Oyster, Braised Irish Duck, Whole Pig Trotter, Conpoy, Iberico Meat Ball, and many more, you will be sure to start 2018 on an auspicious note! This is perfect for your extended family gatherings and is believed to ensure abundance and prosperity for the year ahead.

For those who do not eat meat or have vegetarians in your family, the Wan Hao Premium Vegetarian Pen Cai ($828 for large, $528 for small) is also available for takeaway! Featuring Black Truffle, Morel Mushroom, Japanese Turnip, Pumpkin, Kudzu Stewed with Taro and more, this variation is no less luxurious or fancy than the former but is certainly more accommodating for those with dietary restrictions!

Prosperity Set Menus are also available for those who wish to dine in. From small groups of 4 at $108.80++ per person to tables of 10 starting at $1588++, guests can look forward to decadent line-up of courses such as Wok-fried Lobster Meat with Fresh Milk, Egg White, Caviar and Broccoli and Sauteed Scallop with Prawn. Good food always makes the reunions sweeter and nostalgic. Our personal highlight was this Fried Cod Fish with Celery Sauce. I do not usually like celery but the way Executive Chinese Chef Brian Wong prepared it, was superb and complimented the flaky white thick fillet so beautifully. Balanced and delightful- the way I hope my 2018 will turn out.

Vegetarians need not fret because Wan Hao has got you covered for the set menus as well! There are 3 available, starting from $78.80++ per person to $98.80++, all featuring Black Truffle Yu Sheng, Double-boiled Monkey Head Mushroom Soup with Chinese Herbs and Deep-fried Nian Gao Pancake with Yam Paste.

Of course, for those who prefer customising their own Chinese New Year feast, there is an array of a-la-carte dishes for you to choose from. Hearty and belly-warming picks include the Braised Bird’s Nest with Assorted Dried Seafood Broth and Golden Superior Stock, Crispy Pig Trotter with Wolfberry Sauce and Braised Iberico Pork with Chinese Sausage and Yam. Dishes are usually served by portions so just let them know how many will be having it and the kitchen will tailor accordingly. The Crispy Pig Trotter for one is not to be missed with its crackling skin and tender meat. This comes with a border of julienne vegetables to cut through the richness of the pork and to alleviate some of the guilt that comes with enjoying this.

Finally, wash it all down a refreshing Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Lime Sorbet. Rightfully sourish with subtle sweet notes to clean the palate. This would be your best bet after all the rich and heavy food that you had during dinner. For the traditional ones, leave some tummy space for the Deep-fried Nian Gao Pancake with Yam Paste. You will not regret it!
