If you have not heard of “Tai Cheong Bakery”, then you, my friend, might just be missing out on what was deemed as ‘the best egg tarts in the world’ by Chris Patten. That said, some probably might not even have a slightest inkling as to who Chris Patten is, except for the fact that he was the last governor of Hong Kong. Notwithstanding, let’s just say that these custard-filled tarts are popular and charming enough to form hour-long queues at both the Takashimaya and Holland Village outlets.
The Holland Village outlet is the brand’s first dine-in-concept in Singapore which opened its doors in mid-November 2016 to allow customers to enjoy an authentic cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style teahouse) experience. This 42-seat restaurant comprises two sections – an air-conditioned indoor space for guests to relax amidst an open-concept kitchen and an outdoor area for those who prefer a warmer, windier environment. Dine-in customers would also be pleased to know that the restaurant does not impose service charge and prices stated on the menu are already inclusive of GST.
The Bakehouse by Carpenter & Cook is by no surprise, opened by the same people behind Carpenter & Cook- the “Alice In Wonderland” vintage themed cafe serving up freshly baked pastries in Lorong Kilat. Fast forward three years later and C&C introduces The Bakehouse, also located in the west and at the ground level of Alexandra Central next to IKEA Queensway.
Unlike their flagship outlet, The Bakehouse features more savouries such as wood-fired pizzas, tapas, gourmet sandwiches and pastas, as they cater to the lunch crowds from the offices in the area. Not forgetting however, their homemade cakes, scones and quiches are also still available on display. Decor wise, The Bakehouse stays true to the C&C style with vintage paraphernalia, sturdy wooden cabinetry and quirky wall-mounted lanterns for lighting.
Priced at $12, their sandwiches had options ranging from Chorizo, Crab Cakes, Portobello and Grilled Chicken. We had their Pulled Pork with homemade pear compote and rocket. Decently portioned but none too memorable because while the pork was delightfully tender, a bolder flavour profile for the marinate would probably have tied this whole sandwich together more cohesively.
Previously located within the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) campus, Bread Yard has since moved to a cozy corner space of the Galaxis Building at 1 Fusionpolis Place. Specialising in handcrafted breads, the menu is decidedly modest, offering sandwiches, toast, bread puddings, all day breakfasts and naturally-leavened pancakes. Prices are extremely affordable as well, with full platters starting at $10 and sandwiches at $7. No added service charge or GST either.

We made our way here for lunch on a Thursday and the cafe which seats about 50 pax, was packed with hardly an empty table around. Filled mostly by staff from the surrounding offices, Bread Yard is certainly a crowd favourite with their fuss-free ordering system and laid-back setting.
Tiong Bahru Bakery first made its foray into our local cafe scene in collaboration with Spa Esprit Group two years ago and fast earned the title of the ‘best croissant in Singapore’ as dubbed by many media heavyweights and food critics. The man behind this successful bakery and its baked goods made from traditional French techniques, is none other than celebrated French baker Gontran Cherrier. Two years later, he is back again in Singapore to introduce more delectable goodies for the fans of Tiong Bahru Bakery.
This humble bakery which used to pack in the crowds since the day they opened their doors at the corner of Eng Hoon Street in the hipster enclave of Tiong Bahru (hence its ‘heartland’ name) has also since launched two more outlets at Raffles City and Tangs Orchard as an answer to the demands for Gontran’s well-loved breads and viennoiseries.
First up on their new menu is the Panini Lunch Set $9.90 which comes with a choice of either Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese or Bacon and Mushroom Curry. We tried both paninis and thoroughly enjoyed the classic combinations of those ingredients put together. The former was my personal favourite while the latter though delightful barely had a hint of curry spice flavour. We think that calling it a Bacon and Mushroom Panini would suffice and it would still be as popular. Each panini also comes with a side of Caesar salad freshly tossed with croutons, bacon and parmesan cheese and so well-dressed that even those adverse to salads would be happy wolfing this down.
Also new are these two hot dog viennas- Spicy Pork Hotdog with Black Sesame Vienna and Chicken Hotdog with Pepper Vienna $5.30 each. While the price may be a tad steep for plain ol’ hotdog buns, these are actually hardly plain and neither are they run-of-the-mill. For starters, its hearty size is almost justification enough for its price, next would be the fluffiness of that sesame/pepper bread and finally how the thick overlaying melted cheese ties it all together so beautifully. The chicken one actually packs a punch with its subtle spread of dijon mustard while the pork hot dog tasted somewhat like smoked cured chorizo.
The Tiong Bahru enclave welcomes a new quirky tenant which effortlessly blends the new and the old by reviving an abandoned Chinese medical hall and turning it into a Western cafe/bakery. All cakes and cupcakes are baked in-house with prices starting at $3 for the latter and $6 for a slice of cake.
The Dispensary, located along Tiong Bahru road catches the eye with its bold Chinese characters, monochrome colors and oriental touches in architecture which the owners have insisted on preserving, to retain its authenticity. Medicine cabinets and a traditional Chinese weighing scale are some of the antique tools still used in the cafe and many, especially the older folk can relate and reminisce about the old times while enjoying a cup of house blend from Spinelli.
12 flavors of cupcakes are available every day with the usual favorites of Death by Oreo, Lil’ Red (Red Velvet) and Lemon Meringue while new ones such as Kaya Cup, Lychee Indulgence and Violet Dream sure piqued our interests. While $3 may appear affordable for a cupcake, it is also worth noting that cupcakes here at The Dispensary are sized smaller than the regular ones from say Plain Vanilla.
