Adelaide Eats: Elephant Walk Cafe

I really dont understand the deal with dessert places with dimmed lights. Devour Dessert Bar, Elephant Walk Cafe and Spats Cafe are 3 such examples. Really, what’s the point of not being able to see clearly what you are eating? But then again, they say that when one sense is blunted, another is heightened, so Im guessing taste in exchange for sight? Anyhow to give this place some credit, while the seats are a little cramped (or cosy as some like to put it), there is a backyard with proper tables and chairs (if you dun mind sitting in the cold and eating ice-cream of course) and it is actually quite pretty! Think desserts under the stars =P I like!

Peanut Butter Waffles $12- Served with chocolate syrup, peanuts, ice-cream and cream in between the waffles

Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake $12– served with ice-cream, cream and fruit

Banana Waffles $12– Banana, chocolate syrup, cream and ice-cream with 2 waffles

Sticky Date Pudding $12– Served with ice-cream, cream and fruit

Yes as you can tell, I love my peanut butter :) Nice place to go and chill but preferentially not in a big group or you’ll find yourselves pretty squashed in the sofas like we were. But I guess it is a nice romantic cafe and we saw many couples there! Hee

Adelaide Eats: Regent Thai

Came here for dinner after Tys’ volleyball game since we were too tired to do any cooking so it was Thai food in North Adelaide to the rescue. It was a Wednesday night and all the restaurants around the area were pretty quiet but Regent Thai was still relatively occupied so we decided it couldnt be that bad and walked in! :) I didnt bring my camera so photos were taken with an iPhone 4! :X

POH TEAK $8.50– Prawn, squid, mussel and scallop in hot and sour clear soup topped with chilli and basil

GAI or NEAU PUD KHING $16.50– Chicken or beef stir-fried with ginger, spring onion, black fungus and mushrooms (mild)

GAI or NEAU PUD PRIK $16.50– Chicken or beef stir-fried with seasonal vegetables, fresh chilli and garlic (hot)

Well it really wasnt bad at all! Love gravy laden rice and the portions were just nice. They were also pretty generous with the ingredients in the soup as well :) Good impulsive decision made after all.

Adelaide Eats: Bartons at Caledonian Hotel

Because Darren Koh’s photos are just plain awesome! The reason why the photography is exceptionally amazing in this post is because they were not taken by me! Credits to Darren Koh! :)

We went to Caledonian Hotel on Friday night to visit Ian since he was the chef there! Had to try his cooking! So among the group of 7 of us, we ordered a couple of mains and starters to share! Here they go:

Capesante e maise $16.90– Seared scallops with sweet corn puree, black truffle butter and baby watercress

I am starting to like seared seafood. Especially after the Aburi Salmon at Wasai and now these yummy scallops that just melt in your mouth. The sweet corn puree was a perfect match as well! Should have been given some bread rolls alongside to dip!

Linguine e granchio $34.90– Linguine with blue swimmer crab, bug meat, shallots, garlic and spicy shellfish bisque

Ian’s recommendation that was fantastic! Havent had such good seafood linguine in a while and the crabmeat was tender with the subtle spiciness of the bisque.

Anatra e arancione $34.90- Crispy skinned duck breast with shallot fritters, asparagus, fennel, rocket and burnt orange vinaigrette

The rest thought this was really good and tender as well. I thought the vinaigrette was pretty awesome.

Pesce e gamberi $32.90- Roasted barramundi with king prawns, crispy pancetta, salt cured olive tapenade and saffron veloute

Fresh barramundi that melts in your mouth. Couldnt ask for more :)

Pollo salsiccia anatra $27.90- Pan roasted chicken breast with duck sausage and pistachio stuffing, creamy potato mash and rich chicken jus

Darren thought that this chicken breast wasnt as dry as normal breast meat was supposed to be. I liked the creamy potato mash :)

Maiale con masala $31.90– Murray Valley pork, pancetta and date involtino with a pecorino and parsley salad and Marsala jus

Another of Ian’s recommendation.

Gnocchi e funghi $28.90– Baked gnocchi with wild mushrooms, crème fraiche, pine nut pangrattato and parsley pesto

Loved the garlic crumble at the top. Not a huge fan of gnocchi though!

Di cioccolato fondente $12.90- Soft centred warm chocolate pudding and vanilla bean gelato

Hmmm everyone thought this fondente was very well done but the quality of chocolate used was not that fantastic :(

Crostata di agrumi $12.90– Caramelized limoncello tart with white chocolate cream and orange toffee syrup

YX’s favourite dessert. She thought that it tasted a lot better than it looked!

Semifreddo e fragole $12.90– Native honey semifreddo with balsamic caramel strawberries, pistachio soil and praline

Prettiest dessert ever :) The guys had fun trying to break the biscuit at the top but I think in the end someone just ate it up…

Overall bill came up to about $327 between 7 of us? The portions are really small though. But that’s with fine dining I guess, quality food in small portions. The place is also quite small so do remember to make your reservations in advance! Service was also great but be prepared to wait quite a while for your food. If you do come, definitely try the linguine and the scallops! You wont regret it :)
